This is a reduced version of a full-length painting 'Jeune fille fellah' of the same date. The reduction was sold by the artist to the Paris-based art dealer Goupil on 14 November 1876, whereupon it entered a private collection in Holland. It returned to Paris in 1908. The picture’s subsequent whereabouts were unknown until its donation to Newcastle in 1953.
