The four-dial clock face is mounted on an ornate wrought iron pavilion with a round arch to each face, supported on open-work wrought-iron pylons and buttresses. The copper cupola roof is topped with a weathervane with lions rampant. The clock stands on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben. Although the original gate was Roman, the present gate was built in Georgian times to allow coaches through. However, the clock wasn’t added until the Victorian era, commissioned to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
