Baron Reay was a founding Fellow of the British Academy and President, 1902–1907. He was born and educated in the Netherlands, where he served in the Dutch Foreign Office, and moved to England in 1875. He served as Governor of Bombay (1885–1890) and as Under-Secretary of State for India (1894–1895). He was Chairman of the London School Board (1897–1904) and President of the Council of University College, London from 1897. Through his connection with the Royal Asiatic Society, he became involved in the movement to establish the British Academy.

Anton van Anrooy was a Dutch painter and illustrator who settled in London in 1896.
