The title is the name of a pub named after Thomas Doggett, organiser of the London Bridge to Chelsea rowing race. In the foreground, right, are three standing figures in costume; one wears a red decorated coat and a tricorn hat and holds a loudhailer to his mouth; a second wears shorts and a sweater and holds a decorative badge and the third figure holds an oar and wears a badge depicting the white horse of Hannover; middle ground, four spectators on a mooring platform, two gulls on an iron float, six skulls / skiffs starting the race, rowing boats, a pleasure boat and a tug; background, barges, warehouses, cranes and the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
