Second Lieutenant Desmond Mulholland landed in occupied Guernsey with Second Lieutenant Philip Martel on 10 July 1940 to gather information. They were taken by submarine and dropped off in a rubber dinghy, landing on a small beach called Jonais. The sub was due to pick the pair up after a week, but unfortunately the sea was too rough for a safe transfer. Mulholland decided the only thing to do was to give himself up. Before doing so, he obtained a Royal Guernsey Militia uniform from the Bailiff, Ambrose Sherwill (a family friend). Mulholland and Martel were sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Poland. He survived the war but died in a tragic accident soon afterwards. Arthur Michael was an artist and illustrator, providing illustrations for 1930s travel posters.
