This is a copy of a painting showing the departure of hunters (not ‘peasants’) by the Austrian Franz Defregger (1835–1921) which has been in Dresden since 1877. The Newport collection also has a ‘Boy Jesus in the Temple’ given by the same donor in 1938: this is also a copy of ‘Christ in the Temple’ (1871) by the German Heinrich Hoffman (1824–1921) which is now in New York. Both are recorded as by ‘Essen von Matern’ but this identity was not resolved in Art UK's Art Detective discussion about this work up to September 2020 and remains so.
