Haldane graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1848 and worked as resident physician at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before spending time studying in Vienna and Paris. When he returned to Edinburgh Haldane also returned to working in the infirmary as well as lecturing in the Edinburgh medical school at Surgeons’ Hall on topics including medical jurisprudence and clinical medicine.

Haldane was secretary and then president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and also represented the college on the General Medical Council.
