A carved relief, reading from left to right, showing a couple, a seated old man, a great reclining male, a woman with two young boys and to the right another male playing a flute. Manley’s cycle is compressed into four stages: childhood, youth with beginning romance, maturity with the responsibilities of parenthood, and old age. This cycle of human time is balanced by the timelessness of art represented by the flute playing male.
