Dame Alicia Frances Jane Lloyd Still is depicted wearing her matron's uniform in this half-length portrait. Lloyd still was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka to British parents, and drew up in Somerset. After a time at a hospital in Wiltshire, she became a probationer at the Florence Nightingale School at St Thomas’s hospital. She is said to have received a letter, medical textbook, and posy of flowers from Florence Nightingale on her appointment as Sister to Charity Ward. She was Matron at Brompton Hospitals and Middlesex Hospital before being appointed Matron of St Thomas’ Hospital in 1913. There she was also superintendent of the Nightingale Training School until her retirement in 1937. She supervised military hospitals and was honoured with the Royal Red Cross.
