On 5th/6th June 1944 paratroops and gliderborne infantry of the 101st and 82nd US Airborne Division began the assault on the western end of the Normandy landing area, part of Operation Overlord, the liberation of Europe. The painting depicts a C47A Skytrain, the lead aircraft of 439 Troop Carrier Group, based at Upottery near Taunton, commanded by Colonel C. H. Young, crossing the Channel. The dropping zones were in close proximity to Sainte-Mère-Église on the Cherbourg Peninsula. The troops were dropped at 12.16am on the 6th June 1944. When in RAF use, the C47 A Skytrain was known as the Douglas DC3 Dakota.
