This unfinished painting documents Allied preparations for D-Day in the War Room of the Portsmouth Army Base. It was commissioned while Freedman was working as an Official War Artist during the Second World War.

Freedman was born in London’s East End to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. He attended evening classes at St Martin’s School of Art, followed by a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, where he studied under the painter Paul Nash, himself an Official War Artist during both wars. Already well known for his commercial illustration and poster work for notable companies, such as the London Underground, Freedman carried out a number of commissions in this post.

Freedman served first with the British Expeditionary Force in France, then with the Admiralty until 1946 and was awarded the CBE for his war work.
