The archetypal ‘sleeper’, slumped in death-like pose, is depicted in thick, darkly brooding impasto oils. It reflects the influence of European expressionist art introduced to Wales by refugee Polish artists Josef Herman and Martin Bloch in the 1940s. Llanberis-born Selwyn Jones served with the Royal Navy from 1945 to 1948. He then studied at Manchester College of Art and won a scholarship enabling him to visit Paris. He worked as a freelance illustrator in London before taking a teaching post in Caernarfon. From 1960 he lectured in colleges at Rochdale, Newport and finally The Normal College, Bangor, where he was Head of the Art Department until retiring in 1982. Jones participated in many exhibitions including the annual National Eisteddfod, and held one man shows in North and South Wales.
