This is a painting of a coal miner at work cutting coal in a Welsh coal mine. The subject of work and of Wales's working class communities were what interested the artist, Tony Evans. Evans knew the industries of south Wales (coal mining, tinplate making and other heavy industries) well. He became a full-time artist following his retirement from industry. He experimented with a number of styles including what he referred to as planar style, as seen in this painting.
