Crucifixions are a major theme and although Aitchison was not religious the subject struck a particular resonance with him: 'The Crucifixion is the most horrific story I've ever heard,' he said. 'They were all ganging up against one person. As long as the world exists one should attempt to record that. It was so unfair.'

This large-scale painting won Aitchison the first Jerwood Painting Prize in 1994 when he was shortlisted alongside Maurice Cockrill, John Hoyland, Yuko Shiraishi, Euan Uglow and John Lessore.
