Clare Woods’s paintings are transcribed from photographs often taken at night in desolate, overlooked areas such as the undergrowth and woodland. This helps to explain the semi-abstract quality of her paintings. Nature is recreated as a menacing, inhumane force. The titles of her works are frequently taken from old orphanages and asylums throughout England. Woods uses the association of the images conjured to situate her paintings in a mental landscape which, like the vegetation, is confused and trying to escape. Her technique is to layer enamel paint on aluminium which results in an often claustrophobic and creepy image. For Woods, the process of painting and the application of colour and texture are as important as the subject matter.
