Early in his career Maxwell developed a very individual style in his painting, which has affinity with the work of Odilon Redon and of Chagall. The subject matter was transformed by his imagination – much of his figure work in watercolour is almost of a dream-like in effect. Colour, imagery and handling are all important elements. His oils, such as 'Corner Table', offer a complete contrast, their bold decorative effect produced by thick impasto and glowing colour.
