The picture shows part of the Conway railway bridge on the left so cannot predate 1846. The received attribution to William Webb (1790–1856), is also unlikely and impossible if the 1876 date much more recently added on the back of the frame were correct. That was presumably based on an opinion of a near illegible date in the lower right corner between a clear inscription ‘Conway Castle’ and the ‘W. Webb’ signature. An Art UK Art Detective discussion in 2022 did not fully resolve the date or other source of confusion but agreed a general view that the artist is William Edward Webb (1862–1903). He could not have done it in 1876 (when 14) but the apparent date inscription is also readable as later ones.
