The wide, open market place that we know today was created in 1830 with the demolition of two rows of houses and The Shambles. The southern face of the church with its soaring tower and magnificent porch were open to view. The Market House on the left was built in 1819. The pump was the only source of water for many houses and businesses until 1882 when piped water was laid.
