This is an interior view showing cider making at Westcott Farm near Callington in Cornwall. The artist has painted herself into the scene on the left, her husband, James Evans, is second on the left – bending down – and ‘Fanny’, the white horse, appears in the centre. The painting is a record of an historic moment when an old cider-press had been rediscovered and it was decided to make cider in the traditional way using local Tamar apples.

Historically, cider was the preferred choice of drink on sailing ships leaving Plymouth. Cider, unlike water, was safe to drink without fear of disease and kept longer.
