Christopher Clayson was born in 1903 and educated in Derbyshire and George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. He obtained an MB ChB from Edinburgh in 1926 and an MD (Gold Medal) in 1936. He was made a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1948, a Fellow in 1951, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1958. During the final MB examination Christopher Clayson suffered from haemoptyses and was admitted to Southfield Hospital, Edinburgh, where he remained for three years. During this therapeutic idleness he worked for, and passed, the examination for the Diploma of Public Health. After a Clinical Assistantship in the Laennec Hospital, Paris, he returned to Southfield as Assistant Physician and Assistant in the University Department of Tuberculosis.
