This painting is a view of the barn at Charleston near Firle in Sussex. Grant had moved into the farmhouse there in 1916, with the painter Vanessa Bell who was his life-long companion. Both painters had studios in the house and the house, outbuildings and gardens were frequent subjects for their work. They also lavished their decorative talent upon the walls, doors and furniture. The house and gardens are now run by a charitable trust and are open to the public (www.charleston.org.uk).This was the first painting acquired for the British Council collection and was purchased from the artist in August 1946.
