Born in Stirling in 1809, Charles Randolph was an engineer and founded the firm which would become the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company. Randolph, a former pupil, bequeathed a sum to the Town Council of Stirling in 1879 to be used to purchase a gold medal annually to be presented to the best scholar in Stirling. Information on the receipt of the portraits from the Smith Gallery, and Charles Randolph was taken from a 1962 edition of the school magazine.
