Eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, King regnant since 2022. Created Prince of Wales on 26 July 1958, invested Prince of Wales in 1969. Took a degree at Cambridge (1967–1970) before serving in the RAF and Royal Navy (1971–1976). On leaving the Navy in 1976, the prince founded The Prince's Trust to help young people realise their potential. He recently published a practical guide to organic gardening. The first painted portrait of Prince Charles to enter the NPG collection was commissioned by the Gallery's Trustees in 1980. The following year the artist was commissioned to paint the Princess of Wales, shortly before her wedding.
