The second son of James VI of Scotland. There are accounts of Charles and Oliver Cromwell meeting during childhood, but there is no evidence to confirm this. Charles succeeded to the combined thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1625. His disputes with parliament led to the breakdown of government, the Civil Wars, and ultimately his trial and execution in January 1649.
