Rosa Bonheur was born in Bordeaux, her father was a painter who exhibited in the Paris Salon. She showed an aptitude for painting animals from a young age and first exhibited at the Salon in 1841. She became an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1894. Queen Victoria was a friend and patron of her work. Rosa Bonheur was widely acclaimed as an animal painter during her lifetime. She is best known for her paintings of horses, often painted on a large scale (one in particular depicts ten life-size horses). Many important French public collections hold her work.
