This children's roundabout is broken and useless, with disappointed people walking away. It was in a small park down by the railway sidings in Barton Hill, Bristol, and the artist was teaching at a secondary school nearby when he painted it. He used to take his pupils sketching in the area which he described as 'a visual goldmine for a "Social Realist" painter'. Gerald Cains has been painting what he calls the 'decayed fringe' of Bristol since the 1960s.
