This painting of the British Volunteers and Belgian Garde Civique demonstrates Dillens' precise draughtsmanship. In the centre-right foreground, Alfred Cortis, the first mayor of Worthing, is awarded the King's prize in the international competition which was organised by Leopold II of Belgium. The building in the background is the first Tir National (national shooting range) at the Place Dailly in Brussels, which was used from 1859 until 1886. Towards the end of his life, Dillens began to paint military scenes such as this one. The attention to details such as the uniforms, while a necessary feature of the occasion, also reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in such tournaments.
