Large sculptures of lions couchant, carved in a bold Egyptian style and built from 11 pieces of limestone. The lions surmount an ashlar limestone plinth which in turn surmounts a plinth of rock-faced sandstone. The four stone lions have been in place since the bridge across the Menai Strait first opened in 1850, but the A55 crossing was built over them. They were actually sculpted in situ and survived a fire which damaged the bridge in 1970. They weigh 80 tonnes each.
