THE BRISTOL HIGH CROSS / BRISTOL’S FIRST HIGH CROSS WAS SET UP AT THE CENTRAL CROSS / ROADS OF THE OLD TOWN TO COMMEMORATE EDWARD III’S / CHARTER OF 1373 WHICH MADE BRISTOL A SEPARATE COUNTY. / IN 1633 IT WAS ENLARGED. IN 1733 IT WAS MOVED TO / COLLEGE GREEN. IN 1765 IT WAS RE-ERECTED AT STOURHEAD / IN WILTSHIRE. / IN 1851 A NEW CROSS, REPRODUCING THE DESIGN OF 1373 / WAS SET UP IN COLLEGE GREEN. A CENTURY LATER, / WHEN THE GREEN WAS LOWERED, IT WAS TAKEN DOWN. / IN 1956 TO SAVE IT FROM DESTRUCTION, THE STONEWORK / OF THIS SECOND CROSS WAS BOUGHT BY A SON OF BRISTOL, / AND GIVEN BY HIM TO THE BERKELEY SQUARE ASSOCIATION. / PART OF IT HAS BEEN RE-ERECTED HERE FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF / RESIDENTS AND VISITORS; eroded and damaged lettering below the figures on the north side: HENRY VI; on the west side: CHARLES I; on the south side: ELIZA[...]; on the east side: JAMES*
