This sculpture is part of the neo-classical design for the new County Hall for Hertfordshire, begun in 1937 and completed in 1939. The design of the building was influenced by Swedish architecture and the work of Sir John Soane. 'The Cricketer' is set in the Registry Office block, which in 1939 was the Motor Tax Block.
