Alan Cole (b.1927) wheeling a full sack of what is possibly charcoal down a street at the Blueworks, Backbarrow. According to Alan the photograph was taken c.1942–1943 when Alan was approximately 16 years old. Alan Cole started work at Backbarrow Mill aged 13, four days before his 14th birthday, as he started after the Christmas break (the only two days the Mill was closed on was Christmas and Boxing day).
