Inscription description

incised on rear face of shaft: TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO / "AT THE CALL / OF KING & COUNTRY, / LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO / THEM. ENDURED HARDNESS. / FACED DANGER. AND FINALLY / PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT / OF MEN BY THE PATH OF / DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE. / GIVING UP THEIR OWN LIVES / THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE / IN FREEDOM."; and on the front, below a carved relief of a cross, crown and chalice, and 14 names of the dead: THESE MEN OF / BOWLAND / DIED FOR ENGLAND / 1914 - 1919.
