This depiction of an episode in the Boer Wars shows a British soldier in uniform giving a drink to a wounded Boer. The Boers were farmers of Dutch origin who fought against the establishment of British rule in their territories of South Africa. They fought in their ordinary farming clothes, while the British fought in red uniforms. The injured Boer is a dignified figure who accepts the drinking flask in acknowledgement of his imminent defeat.
