Dramatic and eye-catching, the Boer War Memorial: 'The Black Angel' is a striking feature in Castle Park. It depicts a winged, semi-nude female figure, named as 'Peace Crowning the Heroes', as she raises a laurel wreath above her head up to the sky. She stands upon step decorated with scrolls and a carved bay wreath, on a tapered column which is also lavish in its upper decoration.

The plinth bears the inscription, and the names of the fallen soldiers from the area, listed by regiment, rank and surname. Funded publicly for the cost of £340, the memorial was originally unveiled by Brigadier General M. F. Rimington in its original location outside Penrith Town Hall, yet it was moved to Castle Park in 1964.
