A Boer War memorial, presented by Thomas I. Birkin, lace manufacturer. It is a pink granite obelisk, approximately 3 m high, on a square pedestal with a plinth and sandblasted inscription. The work has a stepped square base, with domed corner pedestals.

PRESENTED TO / THE CITY OF NOTTINGHAM / BY / THOMAS ISAAC BIRKIN, JP, DL; other faces: (Names); information board: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN HONOUR OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE BOER (OR AFRICAN) WAR IN THE 1890s. THE FOUR SIDES LIST FOUR DIFFERENT GROUPS OF SOLDIERS IT WAS ORIGINALLY ERECTED AT THE BOTTOM OF KING STREET BUT WAS MOVED HERE IN 1927 WHEN IT WAS GETTING IN THE WAY OF THE NEW TROLLEY BUSES. THE OBELISK AND ITS SUPPORTS ARE MADE OF RED GRANITE.
