Bernard Fergusson joined The Black Watch as Second Lieutenant in 1931. Amongst other roles he served as ADC (aide-de-camp, or personal secretary) to Major General A. P. Wavell in 1935, and Private Secretary in 1941. He was wounded whilst commanding No. 5 Column First Wingate Expedition in Burma in 1943, and served as Brigadier commanding the 16th Infantry Brigade, Second Wingate Expedition in 1943. He was promoted Brigadier in 1955, and retired in 1958. He was Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief New Zealand from 1963 to 1968, and Colonel of The Black Watch in 1969. He wrote 'The Black Watch and the King's Enemies', and many other works. He died in London in 1980.
