The American contralto Belle Cole (1845–1905) wears a black dress with heavy lace and net mantilla-like sleeves, and a deep red corsage on her left shoulder. She wears a black velvet neck ribbon decorated with jewels, diamond earrings and a red rose in her hair. A fur lies across her right knee. A deep-red curtain patterned with flying birds hangs to her right. A heavily jewelled pin is worn on the right of her dress, and she wears a large ring on her right index finger. She is seated, and on her lap she holds a closed copy of Handel's 'Messiah'.
