Sam Baker is a former student on the BA Hons Fine Art degree at SSU. He continues to work as an independent artist. This work was purchased from his degree exhibition in 2006. He says of his work: "My travels around the world have exposed me to many different cultures and societies with very strong traditional beliefs which I have found astounding. Such an intense religious structure with a tradition which is always followed appeals to me as this conveys a sense of unity and continuity. The decorative imagery within my work explores the celebratory nature of tradition. Tradition is what has been before, and what we guide ourselves by, however innovative or unconventional we wish to be, we are always governed by our tradition. It is interesting that what we hold as our tradition, we respect regardless to whether we wholeheartedly believe or understand it.
