The artist explains the story behind this work: 'On 14th December 1931, three Bristol Bulldogs from RAF Kenley are seen climbing away from Reading Aerodrome after a social visit to the Reading Aero Club. The second pilot in line, Pilot Officer Douglas Bader, is turning back with the intention of performing a low-level slow roll across the airfield, but a error of judgement leads to him crashing and, severely injured, he is taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, where both his legs are amputated. For days, Bader fights for his life but, eventually recovers and months later, having been fitted with artificial legs, returns to his squadron where he completes his flying logbook for 14th December. He wrote “ Cross country to Reading.
