For over 100 years, much of the local income for the thriving village of Avoch came from fishing for herring and sprats in the Inverness and Beauly Firth. Today the waters are protected and although there are Kessock herring in the Firth, they are no longer commercially caught.

Tom Mabon has lived in Avoch on the Black Isle since 1985 when the harbour still had several fishing boats. A number of fishermen still live in the village however their boats now operate from other harbours.
