The sculpture is inspired by the Shrovetide ball game. Two characters stand back to back and hold a ball aloft. One of the characters is a child and, being shorter, stands on a pile of books. The child wears a hat reflecting Atherstone's past hat and felting industry. Around the square plinth are four carved relief panels including: a signpost to London and Holyhead; a leaf; the number '2'; and a canal lock gate.
