Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who won against Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, was a renowned military hero in Britain. A version of this bust was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815 (No. 904). Hopper is a sculptor known for his portraits of politicians. In 1807 he completed memorials for William Pitt and Horatio Nelson at the London Guildhall.
