This painting is an inscribed replica of an original version which hangs in the Carlton Club, St James. Here we see a three-quarter-length image of Chamberlain, dressed formally and holding a small slip of paper. Chamberlain was the Prime Minister of Great Britain between the years 1937 and 1940 and was succeeded by Winston Churchill, after Germany invaded the Netherlands, Belgium and France. However, his political career began when in 1915 he was elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham. Sir James Gunn was a Glaswegian-born painter who later moved to Paris where he became an established portrait painter.
