Jean Dunand was born in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland. He studied in Geneva and worked in Paris from 1897, as a metal worker. He developed many new techniques so that while his early metal objects had a rough stoneware-like surface, he later enhanced them with different patinas and later still with lacquers. In 1912, he met the influential Japanese teacher of lacquer work, Sugawara and thereafter, most of his works was based on or influenced by the use of lacquers. His style changed with the times, moving from art nouveau through cubism to art deco, and it is his work in the last that marked him out as one of the leading French artists working in that style. He produced a wide range of objects – pots, portraits, prints, sculpture, screens, furniture, panels, murals and complete room designs.
