'Nancy' Storace was a soprano singer and actress whose parents took her to Italy to launch her career at the age of thirteen. She then spent four years in Vienna (1783–1787) where she sang Susannna in the triumphant first performance of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (1786). Returning to England in 1787, Storace first performed Italian opera at the King's Theatre. She joined Drury Lane as its most highly paid singer in 1789 and specialised in comic roles. Between 1797 and 1801 she toured Europe with the tenor John Braham, her lover for seventeen years. With her dynamic stage presence and infectious good humour, she brought a strong dramatic sense to English opera.
