The subject of 'Andromeda' was taken from Greek legend. She was the daughter of the King and Queen of Aethiopians, and to appease the wrath of Neptune, Andromeda was chained to the rocks and exposed to the sea monster. Perseus, upon his return from killing the Gorgon, slew the monster and set Andromeda free. Queen Victoria bought a bronze version of the statue after seeing it displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and it can still be seen at Osborne House. The statue appears in the 1875 Coalbrookdale Company catalogue (No. 208). A smaller statuette version of Andromeda was also cast by the Coalbrookdale Company.
