A native of Peeblesshire, the sitter was a seed-merchant in Edinburgh. His firm of Eagle and Henderson held part of West Princes Street Gardens as a nursery garden. He was Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh in 1823 to 1825 and Master of the Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh in 1826. He died in office, 1826, and the previous Master, Sir James Spittal, was re-elected to serve as Master again until Charles Baxter was elected in 1827.
