The year 2018 represented the 1,100th anniversary of Aethelflaed’s death in Tamworth. Aethelflaed was daughter of King Alfred the Great and ruled Mercia with her husband Aethelred (also known as Ethelred) and together they defended the ancient kingdom against Viking invaders, after his death in 911, Aethel ruled Mercia alone. She was a warrior. The figure is sited on one of the main routes into Tamworth. Aethel is shown in battledress holding a spear and pointing the way, shield on her back and sword by her side.
