The painting was replaced by Benjamin West's 'Christ Presenting a Little Child' in 1801. Casali's painting had its critics from the first. In 1751 Vertue notes 'at the Foundling Hospital … is one alterpiece [sic], done by Sign. Cav. Casali being the Adoration of the 3 Kings, which being tho't to be not strong enough, by some & of a pale weakly colouring is not put up in its place till the chapel is finished quite. Qu. if this did not disgust the Signor…' ('Notebooks' 111, 157). However, it was eventually put in position and stayed there until removed to make way for West's altarpiece in 1801.
