Paul, Lord Methuen, was strongly influenced by the work of Walter Sickert. For most of his career he had a studio in London, but he painted views of Bath when he was staying at his ancestral home in Wiltshire, Corsham Court. From 1946 onwards, Bath Academy of Art was based there. It became an important centre for art, where some of Britain’s best artists taught.

Abbey Green, one of the quieter corners of central Bath, has survived almost unchanged.
